Humanising financial complexity: Award-winning climate animation

How I turned abstract ESG data into a relatable visual narrative for
a major UK heritage institution.

The goal

The client required a way to transform complex, formal investment reporting into a highly accessible, educational climate animation. The aim was to move beyond traditional financial communication and engage a broad audience – including potential investors and the general public – with the organisation’s net-zero strategy.

The Problem

Financial investment is a dense, abstract subject that can easily alienate people. We needed a visual language that felt fresh and relatable, yet remained strictly compliant with the client’s established brand guidelines. Furthermore, we had a major technical challenge: how to effectively communicate the massive scale of a multi-billion pound investment fund in a short, fast-paced video without losing the viewer’s attention.

The Solution

As the lead creative on this project, I proposed a mixed-media ‘collage’ aesthetic – combining textures, photography and motion graphics – to humanise the financial narrative. To solve the relatability challenge, I developed a lead character who acts as the viewer’s guide through the global economy. I managed the entire creative process from moodboards and storyboarding to the final animation, which included developing a visual system for ‘scale’ to ensure that complex data also felt digestible.

The Outcome

The animation won the Corporate Content Award for ‘Best Use of Animation.’ Crucially, the creative leadership I demonstrated on this project – and the tangible results it delivered – led to my promotion to mid-weight creative designer. Beyond the industry recognition, the campaign achieved over 2.2 million impressions and drove 600+ high-intent clicks to the climate action report within four weeks, proving that sophisticated design can turn complex financial data into a high-performing digital asset.
